ASSESSMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE /HERITAGE STATEMENTS
APPLICATIONS - PLANNING / LISTED BUILDING CONSENT
APPEALS / EXPERT WITNESS

As specialist planning consultants we can assist you in preparing applications for planning permission and/or listed building consent. We can provide the relevant supporting statements required along with Murphy Associates, our sister company. 

We prepare heritage statements to assess the significance of heritage assets (designated and non-designated) and the role of setting. The work undertaken assists informing change, ensuring proposals take account of special interest and significance

Due to our experience and fields of expertise, we represent clients and local authorities at appeal, advising on approaches and acting as an expert witness at Public Inquiries. 

CONSERVATION AREA CHARACTER APPRAISALS

TCS has assessed and written well over 100 Conservation Area Appraisal across the UK. More recent appraisals have been prepared in conjunction with Eimear Murphy, Murphy Associates including Hastings Town Centre, Eastbourne Old Town and Seaside, Queens Park Brighton, Old Town, Brighton  and Old Bedhampton. 

CONSERVATION AREA MANAGEMENT PLANS

Some Management Plans form part and parcels of a Conservation Area Character Appraisal, Others are commissioned later. Management plans are seen as a mechanism to engage with key stakeholders and the local community to safeguard that the character of an area through planning controls (Article 4 Directions, Area of Special Advert Control  but also through local action. 

HERITAGE LOTTERY BIDS 
/ GRANT FUNDING

TCS has worked with local authorities and community groups to prepare NHLF Stage 1 and 2 bids for heritage related projects.  Along with Murphy Associates, we completed the Stage 2 bid for Horton Chapel, Epsom. 

TOWNSCAPE APPRAISALS

Assessing townscape character is a key aspects of understanding 'place' and 'place-making'. By combining our knowledge of understanding the evolution of place, we can use this information in conservation area appraisals, regeneration proposals and schemes for new development.  

PUBLIC REALM

As urban designers we provides services to assess the quality of the public realm to inform improvement schemes. 

MEASURING CHANGE

Commissioned by English Heritage (Historic England), TCS developed a methodology for  measuring change in conservation areas.T he analysis  compares the current position with earlier records and considers the implications for planning in historic areas.
